In a groundbreaking demonstration, Hungary has unveiled its first multi-node quantum key distribution (QKD) network, achieved through an exceptional collaboration between academic and industry experts. Researchers from the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME), Magyar Telekom, AdvaNet Hungary Kft., and Netvisor Zrt. successfully created the country’s first quantum communication test network, complete with a comprehensive key management system.
As quantum computers continue to evolve, traditional encryption methods face growing threats. QKD technology offers a revolutionary solution, enabling key sharing safeguarded by the fundamental laws of quantum physics — making any eavesdropping attempts immediately detectable. European regulations, such as the NIS2 Directive and Hungary’s 2024 cybersecurity law, are actively encouraging the adoption of such advanced technologies.
The newly established network connects three critical locations: BME’s quantum laboratory, Budapest-Kelenföld, and Székesfehérvár. It operates through a three-layered architecture. At the foundational level, Toshiba devices facilitate quantum key distribution. The middle layer consists of servers that handle key management, while the top layer employs classical WDM telecommunications equipment to secure encrypted data transmission.
The true significance of this network lies in its pioneering shift from traditional point-to-point QKD setups to a fully networked system, complete with centralized key management. This achievement has provided valuable insights into the operation of QKD devices and the integration of quantum keys into conventional systems.
The official demonstration took place on April 22 at BME’s Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Informatics. Dr. Sándor Imre, Dean of the Faculty, emphasized that Hungary has seen a growing number of breakthroughs in quantum communication over recent years. He highlighted the importance of this achievement, noting, “Using commercially available devices, we have successfully implemented Hungary’s first multi-node quantum-based encryption network. 2025 is the International Year of Quantum Research and Technology, making this accomplishment particularly meaningful.”
The event concluded with remarks from Dr. László Bacsárdi, head of the Quantum Technology Laboratory, who stressed the significance of the successful 80-kilometer distance trial for the future of Hungary’s quantum communication capabilities.
